How to get amazing results in your business, using the right mindset

I’ve never spoken to any entrepreneur who said, “nah, I don’t really want more clients. I am happy where I am and my whole business is perfect as it is”. Every single one wants to make more money or have more time for themselves, but only a very small fraction of people actually have the ability to do this in a satisfying and effective way. A.k.a. not working every hour under the sun.

So many people start a business that they close down in the first two years that it would lead you to believe that businesses are not something you should start.

But of course this isn’t true. Of course there are ways you can operate your business, whether you’re a serivce provider, coach, consultant or a digital product creator and be effective. But the key lies more with the methods, mindset and the approach rather than the specifics of your marketing activities.

In this article, I’ll write about what this means for you

The reason businesses fail

There are lots of reasons why businesses fail. And it’s not always your fault. But more often than not, it’s your fault or at least partly yours. (Sorry about that, I know this is a hard to swallow pill.)

One of the main reasons businesses fail and 90% of entrepreneurs quit within their first year in the industry is because people approach running their business the wrong way. This is exactly the same reason most entrepreneurs ducks up with their marketing too. They approach running their business and marketing it as short term solutions and quick fixes. I’ll give you an example;

You don’t have enough clients, so just chuck out some ads as some “experts” suggested and you get new clients. But… you can’t keep your members/clients because there aren’t enough VA, coach or big enough team to serve them properly. Or because what you offer and what you ‘actually deliver’ is chalk and cheese. Or your prices are too high after the initial teaser/free/cheap trial period and you get those tyre-kickers who anyway can’t afford you. Or for thousands of reasons. So you run your ads again. And you’re in a vicious circle that you can’t break.

When entrepreneurs think of marketing, many of them just think of advertisement on some social media platforms. And this is really just a clue that they expect everything from a single place. And of course immediately. And this is a huge risk my friend.

Even when they start to market their business without this mindset, they often still end up quitting ‘proper marketing’ before they get anywhere with it. Why? Simply because it isn’t properly integrated into their business. Because they don’t spend time on marketing week by week.

But marketing a business is not optional if you want to increase your sales, grow your business and ultimately make more money.

Let’s take something like posting 2 videos weekly on YouTube or putting out a wide range of content on Instagram. Both of these are great ways of generating clients and engaging with your community. Both of them can be effective and actually make changes to your bottom line.

But at the same time, these channels can take up a lot of time and energy from you. And what many of the ‘marketing gurus’ who recommend these platforms (or in fact any strategy or tactic) don’t realise, is just how much of a ‘thing’ this can be in your life. A ‘thing’ you perhaps hate, but you do, because you’ve been told to by Bob, Joe or Jane (yep, these are fictional names).

Because posting on YouTube or Instagram doesn’t come naturally to everyone. What if you’re camera-shy? What if you really don’t like to be on camera? What if you’re self-conscious? What if you fear that you’ll be ridiculed?

Yes, of course doing these things will give you practice and sooner or later you can become a pro and won’t have any issues to produce content. But if you really hate it, it’ll be obvious. You’ll be suck at it almost inevitably.

If this takes a HUGE effort on your side to commit and you really need to force yourself to do the work then perhaps this isn’t for you. I’m not talking about when you first start something, that’s always going to be challenging and which takes you out from your comfort zone.

But if you miss a few video uploads and start to post hectically, well… your inconsistency made your audience to completely forget about you.

So when you try again to promote yourself, they might just unfollow you, or simply won’t give a flying pig about you anymore.

Solution

So the solution is not to choose the marketing tool/method/strategy/platform that everyone suggests, but the one you can actually stick to.

When you decide about your marketing strategy you need to ask yourself three questions

    • Do I fancy the idea of [e.g. producing 2 weekly YouTube videos] from now on?
    • Am I able to [e.g. produce these YouTube videos]?
    • Can I [e.g. produce 2 weekly YouTube videos] regularly, consistently and even if I’m dead busy?

If your answer is no, don’t do it otherwise you set yourself up for an enormous failure. And if you find one for which you can answer ‘yes’ loudly and confidently, well then we have a winner there!

My advice? You need 3 client-gathering, money-making strategies to make sure your leads won’t dry up. Not even during a global pandemic.

I guess to know this is great, but how about implementing it? That sounds even better!
