Johnny Depp didn’t have an audience when he became an actor. Shall I say a very well-paid actor? From the very beginning.

In the last few days, I’ve heard from at least 5 people that they can’t really sell their high-ticket offers because they don’t have an existing audience. And it came from people who previously were selling high-ticket offers, doing consulting work, and being a freelancer but getting clients in a different way.

Some of them said that’s the reason they don’t even try to sell it because it takes a very long time (minimum a year) to get the audience they need to be able to sell their offer.

“Without a biggish social media follower ‘validation’, they cannot be taken seriously.” “Without an email list, they don’t stand a chance.”

Which I call BS on. You don’t need ANY audience to be able to sell your offer.

Let me just quickly tell you the story of Johnny Deep and how he started his acting career because it was all entirely accidental. After moving to L.A., he wanted to establish himself as a musician.

But things weren’t going in the direction he wanted, and he was filling out job applications and struggling to make ends meet.

And dun dun duuuuuuun, this is where I’m going now…

Nicolas Cage saw him applying for a position in a video store and thought Johnny should consider acting. Yup. He even offered to get Depp in contact with his agent. Depp took him up on the offer, and Cage’s agent sent him to the casting director for the upcoming film A Nightmare On Elm Street.

After a successful audition, Depp landed his first acting gig and began a new career. Made his fortune as an actor in a surprising way. I mean it was pure luck.

He didn’t have any audience; he was a high school dropout. He didn’t take acting classes. He didn’t have a ‘polished’ resume or portfolio he could use. And lo and behold, he made it. He was referred to get a highly paid gig.

Far too many people think the only way to sell their offer is if they have an audience. Preferably an online audience.

They want followers on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and all other channels. They point all over the screen to record funnyish videos and spend 4+ hours a day on social media to grow their audience.

I hate to break it down, but they waste so much precious time.

Social media, an email list, blog readers, YouTube/podcast subscribers and all those audience-building activities are important but not the most important.

And not essential, especially if you pick your business model and marketing strategy to get clients differently.

Yep, the most critical task is to make money first. To do 80% of the time, those things that generate money. And once you make money, you can tweak the percentage and start to do all the other things to make it sustainable and easy.

But first thing first.

To overcome this annoying phase of fluctuating sales and waste time building your audience, you should articulate your offer’s uniqueness and business to the people who want to buy right now.

Yep, I’m not the person who suggests you only aim for those ready to buy now, because that’s only 3% of your possible clients at any given time and everyone wants them – you’ve got some fierce competition for them. But in this case, go for them specifically.

So how did Johnny do?

He used someone else’s audience and got referred. I know it sounds insultingly simple. But this is what it is.

If you quickly want to make money, you only need 3 things.

🔥 Have a crystal clear offer that delivers
🔥 Articulate the uniqueness of you, your offer and your business (so everyone can understand what you’re about and what’s in it for them)
🔥 Build relationships (with possible collaboration/referral partners and clients)

That’s all you need. You don’t need an audience. If you’re able to talk about your offer in a particular and unique way, happy days because you made yourself easily referrable. Your uniqueness needs to answer the ‘why you’ bit, preferably in a convincing way.

That’s what really helps future collaboration and referral partners understand how you could help them or their clients. The better the description of your ‘essence’, the quicker you’ll get clients as it’ll make perfect sense.

Heck, you can even target corporates, they definitely don’t care about your online audience.

And when you start to converse with prospective clients, they’ll get intrigued about it. They’ll have questions because they’ll see the knowledge gap.

Because the knowledge gap is the thing that sticks between you and your clients, that’s the same thing that makes them buy from you.

To put it simply, if you know that and can incorporate it into your messaging when there’s the time to build relationships, talk about your offer and sign clients, you just made it 10 times quicker and easier.
