You want better ranking on Google & more returning visitors (= clients) to your website

I just tweaked my website to make it more appealing to my ideal client. And this also means some ‘housekeeping’ jobs to make sure it performs well, because I want more returning visitors, and better ranking on Google. So should you.

Did you know that 97% of first time visitors leave the page without engaging with your website? Yes, for real.

So this small revamp inspired me to write about improving your website. You’re here, so I guess you have a website and perhaps you don’t want to spend so much money on a designer for a bit of tweaking. Or maybe you created your own website. If so, read on, I’ll give you a few tips to make sure your website does what it’s supposed to do. Bring you visitors and ultimately money.

The tweaks

You may think it’s enough to write awesome articles, full of tips, challenges and advice. Or you upload a video to YouTube and share it on your website too. You wait and hope that your prospective clients will flood your website because you just produced lots of bloody good content.

But when you have visitors they leave the site very quickly. And you don’t know why. You listened to everyone, you wrote lengthy articles and poured your heart and soul into those and they SHOULD read it! Otherwise how will they know that you know your onions?

The thing is, it’s not enough to write the best articles, use the best imagery and best marketing strategy if your site is poorly designed. Yeah I said that. And I’m not just talking about colours. I’m talking about functionality, user experience and the technical bits you hate the most…

If these things are not ‘satisfactory’ then your efforts of writing articles like a literature Nobel Prize winner will achieve not much and won’t help you to get the deserved recognition of your awesomeness.

You can ask but why? Because of Google. Just blame Google. But for real. Google wants you to create awesome articles that help their searchers to solve a problem (so tick for your articles, you’re halfway) AND it wants you to have a high quality website design and function.

Because Google wants to give the best user experience possible. It’s quite logical if you think about it. When you visit a website by googling a search query and the website you landed on is pretty messy, the buttons are too close to each other, the colours are off, it’s not mobile optimised and it looks very weird on your phone… Or it’s slow and sluggish… Would you be impressed? No, you’d close the browser quicker than I say quick.

If this would be your experience when you use Google every single time, sooner or later you’d stop googling. And Google knows this. They know everything…

So that’s one of the reasons Google will put your website somewhere way down perhaps at the 98th position even though you have the best content on it. Google recommends and grants higher ranking to websites which give the best user experience to their visitors. Basically, Google puts you on the ‘naughty list’ if your site doesn’t work well enough.

‘Doesn’t work well enough’, Viki, are you kidding me? What do you mean?

No, I’m not going explore this question deeply, because we’d be here for, I don’t know, a very long time. But I’m going to give you simple fixes that Google likes, which can help you.

These small things can bring you more traffic, as I said Google likes this, which translates to better ranking, more traffic, more leads and more money.

Compress your images

Loading times are always important. If your website doesn’t load quickly enough (under 2.3 seconds on 4G) then visitors may not even wait for your site to load up. They’ll simply close the browser.

You can check your website speed here.

So, one of the ways is to quickly lower your load times is to compress the images on your website. If you’re a WordPress user, just like me, you can do this with plugins that automatically compress your images. This size shrinking will drastically speed up the amount of time it takes for your awesome page to load.

If you don’t use any fancy software or just want to compress your images without installing ‘another plugin’ to the website, check out this page. This is one of my favourite websites, called TinyJPG where you can compress your images for free. So before you upload your images to the website, just drop your png or jpg files onto the site, it’ll compress them and you can download them. Easy-peasy.

Plugin hoarders, remove your unnecessary plugins

Oh yeah, you had a fantastic idea about doing a fancy quiz or pop up makers or I don’t know what. You installed them. And now they’re gathering dust and using valuable space on your website – a.k.a slowing it down for no good reason.

Yeah, I was culpable for this, but I’m much better now. I learnt this lesson about 8 years ago… However, I just deleted 3 plugins today, so I still have room to improve…

But back to you! If you have lots and lots of plugins installed that you aren’t using or you don’t even remember what those plugins do… You should delete these as a matter of priority.

This is a very good, painless and easy way to immediately improve the speed of your site without harming your user experience in any way. Now Google is starting to think about putting you on its ‘nice list

Lead your visitors with internal links

You wrote those awesome articles and other important and useful stuff, now you need to make sure that your visitors read them. One by one.

When you create content you need to have something to give to everyone based on their intent.

Someone wants get some information about what ‘tabata’ is or ‘what the benefits are of going to the gym’ or something like this. They don’t want to buy anything, they just want some information. They need TOFU (top of the funnel) content. Just answer these and give them some DIY kinda info too, so they can start to do something easily, for example basic moves. Something that is low commitment and doesn’t require too much effort from them. No sales material, it’d be too much too soon.

Someone wants to know ‘the best HIIT exercises’ or ‘best gyms in Nottingham’ or ‘how to lose 2 stones in x days’. They already know what they want, they have a ‘need’, but they don’t know where/how they will satisfy that need. They need MOFU (middle of the funnel) content. Give them information about your classes, style, health benefits and community in an informative way. Some meatier stuff than you published for the TOFU stage. They want to compare you to others. Make sure you cover these types of questions and no, there’s no sales in this stage, still too soon.

And the last part is where the intention is to actually buy. Their searches are like this; ‘crossfit nottingham membership prices’ or ‘free gym pass nottingham’ or something like this. They already know which training type they want to do, where the best places are and now they only need a small nudge. The small nudge is BOFU (bottom of the funnel) content. This is your time to shine your sales and objection handling content.

What to do these TOFU, MOFU and BOFU contents to internal linking? A lot. You need to make sure that you link the different types of content to each other. A simple way to explain is that you place links into your blog posts that lead to different articles you already published or products/services that relates to your blog post.

So basically by ‘recommending’ and linking content you can drive your ideal clients to buy from you. Plus, they spend more time on your page. And that’s a pretty important signal to Google that your material is valuable – hence has a very positive impact on your SEO (search engine optimisation).

Visually lead your visitors

Well yeah, you should place some images strategically on your site to lead your visitors eyes. Don’t go crazy, but a few visually appealing images can improve engagement, make your point more obvious or let your ideal clients know what you want them to do.

Every image you upload needs to have a reason, don’t upload images just for the sake of it. They need to give hints to the visitors ‘how to feel’, ‘what to think’ and ‘what action take’.

Check out this page where I included different images and elements to create a flow. And if you want to check out a different ones too, here’s a good one. You can do that on your website too!
