How could a 5 years old give you great advice on your business model?

Charlie is 5 years old and he loves building things with lego. He sits down and decides to build a huge lego castle because Mum and Dad bought him all the different building elements he could possibly want.

He finds the biggest blocks and arranges them in a rectangle shape as the foundation of the castle.

He then clicks the next row of building blocks on the base layer like a professional bricklayer would do.

He does this row by row, layer by layer and places the window and door elements into the structure too.

The castle starts to shape and it looks impressive. This is a big project for a 5 years old.

Charlie carefully places the roof elements onto the top of the building and takes on his proud face when he’s done. He runs to Mum and Dad to show them his majestic castle.

But Charlie has a little sister, Marie. She’s 3 years old and loves to do everything that her big brother does.

This means that now she wants to build a castle just like Charlie did.

Marie grabs the building blocks, there are plenty of elements left as Mum and Dad really spoiled them…

She places the first lego blocks of the castle in a similar way how Charlie did.

But as she’s not as an experienced builder as Charlie, when she places the next layers of building blocks, she doesn’t build a strong wall.

Her castle’s structure is weak and before she reaches the point to place the windows into the building, her wall falls down.

Marie is understandably upset after trying to solve this 2 or 3 times but the wall every single time falls.

Her big brother comes to rescue her from sobbing and eagerly nominate himself to be her architect for the day and shows her how to build a wall that bonds.

A wall that is strong enough to put windows and doors in it and bear the weight of the roof.

Charlie explains to her that the most important part of building a castle is the bond. If no bond, the castle may stand for a bit but the smallest war, or when the prince comes to rescue the princess, would immediately destroy it.

And this is the advice Charlie can give to you too.

If your business model is not built the way that is sustainable and scalable, well… then it’ll crumble.

It’ll take so much out of you and you’ll be frustrated. You can’t make more money if there’s no ‘bond’ if you can’t really rely on your walls.

Because let’s be honest, we all want to scale to have a comfortable life without any financial worries and at the same time free up more time for us.
