I think for me, it started when I was 16 and wanted to earn some money in the summer. I joined a company to sell perfumes door to door, I didn’t want to work in a shop or do something boring as hell. Also as I was doing lots of sports, I was already a competitive athlete and needed something very flexible.😀

No, it wasn’t an MLM company and I wasn’t employed by them, so I only made money if I made sales. And the more sales I had the more money I earned.

So I wanted to earn money because I was very proud and didn’t want to ask for money from my parents for anything. Also, I didn’t want them to tell me what I can buy or how I can spend my money. Don’t take me wrong, I never spent my money carelessly, I’ve always been cautious and good with money.

I went all over the city with my heavy backpack, filled with perfumes and matching deodorants, and was talking to everyone who let me speak. I started to make lots of jokes and made fun of everything, so people were laughing and I had fun too. I knew it was a job but I handled it as a fun experiment where I chat with everyone.

And once, just to make a joke I stated how much would the individual perfume cost and how much a deodorant would cost if purchased individually and I said but if you buy both it’d cost x. The x was 7% higher. I mean it was a joke.

It was something like this; the perfume is £100, the deodorant is £30 but if you buy them together as a bundle you can get them for £140. It was this level of joke on the price (this is not the real price I sold them for).

And I was baffled when the first person said I buy it together and they paid more. I couldn’t say anything I was that surprised and more than a tad confused. I thought they just wanted to be nice or I don’t know. So I ‘tested’ the same thing with others.

After 3 people in a row purchased the ‘packaged bundle offer’ for a higher price I realised 2 things;

A, people don’t pay attention to details
B, if you have fun they don’t mind paying a bit more
C, this is actually really easy (this was a surprise 3rd thing 😄)

So I started to experiment and sell the perfumes based on how individuals would value them. My prices went through the roof and I learnt more about sales, marketing and psychology just in a few weeks which was really incredible.

In under 1 month, I made 3 times more money than my 4 degrees qualified, solicitor father with his 160 IQ. And I was just a kid, still in school. For real.

And he worked his a** off.

Sure, when I worked (it wasn’t every day), I worked from 8am to 7pm but it wasn’t all work. It was a summer thingy. I did most part for the fun (of course, as 16 years old that was a huge amount, it would be still decent money).

I wanted to have fun whilst making a good living. I never thought I’m going to sell perfumes forever and ever, it was just a summer thing and a few weekends when the school started in September. But it thought me that creativity, experiments and fun can lead to much more than a job.

I know that if you do the things you love or have fun with them, the things you’re good at, money will follow. With not that much effort.

I didn’t rip off anyone, I learned about how to communicate with people and how to figure out what is important to them. They could’ve purchased the very same perfumes in the shops for a much cheaper price but they did not. I never lied or mislead anyone and as the perfumes did not have RRP (recommended retail price) I could price them as I wanted them – remember, I wasn’t employed by the company, I was self-employed.

And I was creative and even went on a tour to sell these perfumes. I travelled to a few touristy destinations around the country with a few people (we worked for the same business). Whilst everyone was on foot and went to places in close proximity, I rented a bicycle and could cover a much bigger area. Of course, I made the most sales.

Or I went to a few massive events, gigs and festivals because there was a huge crowd and just sold perfumes where people were congregating.

And there were times when people wanted certain fragrances I sold out already, so I literally just went to the closes shop to buy them and went back and sold them with a very decent markup.

I even had lots of people who didn’t want a perfume for themselves but they wanted to buy me one or give me the money for it because of the way I handled them or I made them laugh or I was creative. Don’t overthink it, I didn’t get nasty offers.

Of course, it was work, but it wasn’t. And it was extremely profitable. I mean, as for a 16 years old that amount of money I made whilst literally having so much fun?! Yeah, this is not something a job can offer.

And if we’re talking about entrepreneurship I’m not saying that you won’t need to work, because you will need to. But it won’t feel like work if you have fun.

Selling perfumes was the thing that first helped me with high-ticket offers. Oh yeah, you bet, I sold them for about 5-6 times higher than their original price was because people wanted them. Seriously, the prices for those perfumes were high, about 3rd of the average monthly salary. And sales became easy and natural because I didn’t convince anyone and didn’t give a flying pig if they bought it or not. I knew I’ll sell out every day. And I did.
