You’re not alone if you’ve seen tons of rubbish content on social media. Every corner of the internet, someone wants to sell you something, and you constantly run into the difficulties of creating content that genuinely helps you market your offer.

And some people copy others’ content because it seems easier. Of course, they try to shake the ominous feeling off like they’re just using those posts/content as inspiration: coughs and eye-rolls, inspo my foot. If every time I’d get paid by someone’s nicking my posts/content, I’d be a millionaire just by that.

And this copy culture is why you see and expect to read everywhere the generic, regurgitated rubbish like; know your target audience, gauge their interest in your product or service; craft a message that appeals to them; blabla.

Moreover, you might even follow that trend and say the same things others do. In the same order. Why? Because this is what you used to see. You’re not a marketer; you just follow the path they put you on. And I’m about to show you a different direction.

Because frankly, I am fed up seeing that kind of rubbish. I mean, who on earth wants to sound like everyone else? If you want to sell with your content, you need to be unique. You need to differentiate yourself, and you can do that by using a few simple steps, which I’ll address of them in this article.

So, let’s get down to business. I want to tell you a few big ‘things’ you need to get your sales game up and show you 8 bad examples you should not follow.

So firstly, be clear! Yeah, this sentence sounds pronounced, but it’s not. I suppose you know your target audience and what they want, etc. And you can tell them what you can offer to them and how. And please don’t forget that when they scroll on social media, they’re not in buying mode, meaning they don’t like to receive a pitch in their face – that’s insulting. They don’t want to read about how awesome you/your offer is.

Sure, they’re happy to celebrate with you, but this is not equivalent to them standing up, going to a separate room to grab their cards and purchasing your thing.

They’re open to receiving interesting, surprising and entertaining information.

And if we’re talking about lead generation and sales, people want to know and understand what they’d get if they give your email address for a lead magnet or buy from you. Ages ago, the trust element in the online world was lost, meaning people need more information due to the hoaxes and con artists they met before coming across you.

But I don’t want you to misunderstand me; people also LOVE getting/buying stuff they find on social media.

As I mentioned earlier, I went onto Facebook and took a few screenshots just now about MARKETERS’ posts. Because if they duck up this bad, and they are supposed to know what they should post, how could you know what to put out?

The top got 9 comments… Please… that’s really bad considering they’re marketers and get access to huge audiences, and I mean it. So why have these posts flopped?

Want to read more of these knowledge nuggets and keep in touch?

You don’t know what you get. Like at all. The first could be training that teaches you to launch a lead magnet, or it could be a done-for-you service. It also could be a simple question or an actual lead magnet. You just don’t know what’s the OP’s (original poster) intention. And the more confusing, the fewer comments she’ll get.

The second is very vague. What desires could I claim? What does energetic compatibility mean? Bah, I have no clue; I skip it – there’s zero comment, not accidentally…

The third, ok, provides a bit more info; 3k in 3 days, and this is a masterclass led by 2 sales experts. But who is this for? Product-based businesses? Infopreneurs or freelancers? Is it a free or paid masterclass? Without crucial information, what do you think who jumps on a post like this? Yes, you guessed well, people who don’t want/can spend money on their service. This is the ‘perfect’ freebie-seeker bait…

And the fourth, again, it’s missing the main parts. Is this for dropshipping companies? Is this a manifestation routine? Perhaps a financial? Or marketing? It’s just rubbish, and again, it only attracts people who believe that a simple routine (never as simple as they say) will lead to 6 figures. How long would I need to follow that routine to hit the infamous 6 figures?

Let’s see more examples!

In this selection, the top post got 12 comments… Not great; let’s see what could be the problem with these.

Post number one; target audience partly identified, which is excellent compared to the previous ones. It promises more clients, more money and more you in 90 days with a free 3-day workshop. Honestly, not sure what exactly I’d get. Let’s say I sell journals; would that work for me? If I’m a single mum, I don’t have much time to spend 3 days on a workshop, especially if I don’t even know if it’d work for my business. I’d need to know what the workshop would cover and how much actual commitment would I need to benefit from their training.

Let’s see the second one; this post is an ‘identifier post’ and goes similarly to our very first post (the one with the lead magnet) with the question, ‘who is ready’. So if I’d think of transitioning my 1:1s to group coaching, I might be interested. The target audience is clear (wohooo), but the second question might bring up objections in me. What makes me ‘ready’ to transition to my business model? And stuff like that kills the engagement.

The third one; well, this is extremely vague. Will the OP (original poster) do this for free, or is it her paid offer? Is it a course / training / webinar / coaching or service? More qualified leads… Do they mean they’re going to teach people how to qualify leads? Or how to generate leads? Or how to generate qualified leads? Because if it’s the latter, I won’t trust them as their post didn’t qualify in any way, anyone…

And the last one, the OP, is a service provider whose posts say she gets around 20 prospects a week saying yes. If this were true, she’d say she gets 20 clients weekly. Yes, I know people don’t read things thoroughly on social media or anywhere online, although there’s a considerable difference between prospects and clients.

As you can see from these 8 posts that a lot of marketers are not doing a great job.

What should you do if you want better results?

Firstly, be clear about what you’re selling to who, how can they have it, what results they can have and how much will your offer set them back. And I mean in your posts, not just generally speaking.

Sure, I picked promotional examples from 8 marketers because I wanted to show you that the simplest form of posts (short promo posts) that should/could generate hundreds of leads are not bringing in nearly anything for them. These posts, if written differently, could’ve brought in tons of engagements.

Secondly, anything you post needs to satisfy your target audience’s desires. If there’s no clear answer for the “what’s in it for me” question, they won’t do whatever you ask them to do.

Your target audience needs to know that the service/offer you have IS FOR THEM.

So when you create content you need to cater for them. This is obvious, still I’d like to empasize this a little bit. You get the most out of any content if you make it bout them and not about you. Please read the last sentence again. It’s about them. Your offer? Sure, you create your content about your offer but for your target audience. You need to craft the stuff from their perspectives. What’s in it for them? How they can utilise your thing? Does your thing give them a big enough ‘reward’ to act on it?

Because the thing is, you need engagement. Doesn’t matter we’re talking about blog posts, YouTube videos, podcast episodes or social media posts. If there’s no engagement, the algorithm/engines will not promote your content. It means your reach gets smaller. Less people will know about you. And that results in less eyeballs on the business and fewer sales.

So make it about them, by your offer.

But you still need great ideas you can create content around. Ideas that you can use, whether you’re a service-based business owner, freelancer, coach or consultant or course creator. And you also need places where you can post your content on Facebook and get those leads and sales. And you might want to create artwork for Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to help you stand out and make your point stronger.
